Introducing: Bitte Kai Rand – Behind the Brand

“Dressing for every day should be pleasurable, comfortable and fun”

These are the words of Bitte Kai Rand, a Danish designer with a clothing brand of the same name – one of our favourites here at Brenda Muir.

With an ethos that places function as an equal alongside flare, it’s an approach that’s evidenced in every piece of Bitte Kai Rand clothing we stock, making them a popular choice with our customers.

The woman behind the name

Before we delve into the story of the brand, let’s first familiarise ourselves with its namesake.

Bitte Kai Rand is a designer who began her journey in the early 1980s.

Citing Yohji Yamamoto, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Dries Van Noten as some of her primary influences, it’s no surprise that contrast and contradiction sit at the heart of everything she does.

Despite being no great fan of academic study, Bitte graduated from Denmark’s prestigious Royal Design Academy. Showing her signature tenacity and drive from the off, starting her own business just a year later.

A new fashion house is born

Bitte Kai Rand (the business) began as a made-to-order service, demonstrating keen awareness and consideration for the wearer by paying close attention to ‘real bodies’ rather than catering to a broader appeal.

Ironically, it was this bespoke approach that attracted the attention of local department stores, and it wasn’t long before Bitte started noticing similar designs to her own on the rack.

While this might discourage some, Bitte was inspired to take action, shifting her focus towards wholesale fashion, with her ethos of practicality in fashion remaining firmly intact.

While undoubtedly driven, Bitte would be the first to admit that her mind is not guided by a strategic approach.

Fortunately, it wasn’t long after the fashion house’s inception that she met her now-husband, Michael Rand, who remains CEO to this day. With Bitte’s passion and Michael’s business acumen fueling their work, Bitte Kai Rand has enjoyed incredible success over five decades.

Extraordinary fashion for everyday living

By their own admission, Bitte Kai Rand’s clothes are designed to be worn for all occasions by people of all ages. This is best exemplified in their ’90s ad campaigns.

Progressive in their inclusion of often-excluded demographics in the fashion world, including breastfeeding mothers and the elderly, Bitte Kai Rand’s inclusive approach allows us to see and appreciate its made-to-order roots.

The looks

While some may argue that designs aimed at everyone fail to satisfy anyone, this couldn’t be further from the truth in the case of Bitte Kai Rand.

Radical in their inclusivity, each piece not only possesses its own character but also allows ample space for the character who inhabits them, as well as for their tastes, earrings and necklaces.

This approach remains true to Bitte’s vision for fashion that is comfortable and enjoyable for the wearer while inviting a playful spirit.
