Whether you’re wrapping up for a cold and frosty morning walk or heading out for an evening on the town, a well-chosen scarf doesn’t just keep you warm and snug; it adds texture, colour, and personality to your outfit.
The best part? There’s really no wrong way to style a scarf. They’re so versatile that you can easily play around with your look, getting creative with your outfits, whether you’re pairing them with your favourite knitwear or a tailored coat.
We’ve all heard the saying that an accessory can make an outfit. In winter, that accessory is undoubtedly your scarf, the key piece that completes the look. That’s why we’ve decided to share our tips on how to style a scarf this winter!
Choosing the right scarf for winter
Length of the scarf
When it comes to styling your scarf, it all starts with finding the right length. Scarves come in a variety of sizes, each offering its own look and function. Smaller scarves pair well with a classic T-shirt for a simple, effortless look, while longer designs are perfect for wrapping up on chilly days.
A good rule of thumb is to match your scarf to your height. Shorter or mid-length scarves tend to look great on petite frames, while taller people can opt for longer, wrap-around styles.
Longer scarves also give you more ways to play around, whether you’re layering up for warmth or even experimenting with wearing your scarf on your head for a cosy, chic look. Picking the right length for you just makes styling feel that bit easier.
Materials
It’s easy to overlook, but the material of your scarf makes a huge difference, especially in the winter. Think soft, thick fabrics like wool, cashmere, or chunky knits for that cosy, wrapped-up feeling without the bulk.
If you prefer something lighter, cotton or modal gives you warmth without overheating and still adds a nice bit of texture.
And if you’re experimenting with how to wear scarves in different ways, choose fabrics that feel gentle on your skin and drape nicely, so they stay comfy all day.
The right material doesn’t just look good, it’s what keeps you comfortable and warm, and most importantly, helps you feel your best.
Popular styles for winter
The classic asymmetric wrap
If there’s one scarf style that never goes out of fashion, it’s the classic wrap. It’s great for adding a bit of volume to your outfit while keeping you warm, and it works beautifully with longer scarves. The extra length gives you room to play around and drape it just right, which can really help elevate a look.
Start with a thin, long scarf, something like our Salisa scarf is perfect. Drape it over your right shoulder so most of the length falls in front, then wrap the long end across your chest, over your left shoulder, around your back, and back over your right shoulder and arm.
To keep everything in place, tuck the bottom of the scarf into a belt. It’s an easy way to make the look feel polished. And if you’re feeling a little extra, add a necklace or some delicate jewellery on top. It instantly gives the wrap a more bling and stylish look.
Hoody & scarf in one
This winter has already brought some standout scarf styles, but one of the biggest trends we’re seeing right now is the hoodie-and-scarf-in-one look.
It’s the perfect mix of practical and trendy, keeping you warm and dry while adding a fresh and different twist to your outfit.
We’ve especially loved seeing this style in snood-style designs like our Rabionek Hood, which gives you the option to wear the hood up or down, and play around with how to wear your scarf on your head in a really effortless way.
However, you can create this look using a regular long scarf too. We’d suggest a chunky knit or wool scarf to add texture and help it stay in place. Our Marella scarves are a popular choice at the moment and are perfect for this.
To get the look, find the middle of the scarf and place it at the back of your neck (or on top of your head if you’re going for the hoodie-style version). Let the sides fall over your shoulders, then take one end and toss it over the opposite shoulder. It’s an easy way to achieve that cosy, layered vibe while keeping your outfit interesting.
One-shoulder look
Another trend that we are seeing everywhere is the one-shoulder scarf look. It’s super easy, looks effortlessly chic, and keeps you cosy at the same time.
All you have to do to create this look is wrap your scarf around your neck, pick one long end up, and swing it over your shoulder… it’s as simple as that!
The trick is picking a thin, neutral scarf that goes with pretty much everything in your wardrobe. Shorter scarves, like fleece mini styles, are really popular at the moment. They add a bit of shape and interest without feeling bulky.
We’re seeing a lot of women loving pieces from Henriette Steffenson, which are perfect for giving your go-to casual coat and boots outfit a little extra style this A/W.
This may sound surprising, but this look can be dressed up or down and shouldn’t just strictly be worn with ‘casual’ outfits. It goes perfectly with everyday outfits like knitwear or a simple top, and we’ve also seen a lot of women style it with A-line and jersey dresses for a more polished, put-together look.
