At Brenda Muir, it’s no secret that we like to champion brands that do things a little differently.
Whether it’s utilising interesting shapes and textures in the clothing we stock, or curating accessories that make our customers feel special, we always want to offer an alternative to the norm while maintaining style and flair.
When it comes to jewellery in particular, our approach remains the same.
Eye-catching colours? Innovative manufacturing techniques? Diverse materials?
We look for brands with all of the above, and there are few that embody this boldness of creative spirit better than Katerina Vassou.
Read on as we look closer at one of our favourite brands.
The brand
Founded in Athens, Greece by Katerina Vassou herself, Vassou is guided by the belief that jewellery isn’t just an accessory to complete an outfit but should be an integral part of the overall look. However, this doesn’t mean the aim is ever to blend in – quite the opposite!
Designed to be instantly recognisable, Vassou’s jewellery has received acclaim not only in Athens but worldwide, reaching audiences in over 30 countries.
The creative process
Not just the name, but the driving force behind the brand’s creative process, Katerina Vassou, like many artists, often chooses to become a servant to the means used in her creative output.
Just as a musician may be inspired by a new instrument or a painter experimenting with new paints or brushes, Vassou allows the materials she has at hand to take the lead.
Whether using silver, gold, semi-precious stones, or even rope and bone, the inherent character of each material is preserved in each piece.
However, while Vassou allows the material to guide her creative path, it is not her sole source of inspiration. Keen to keep the wearer in mind during the crafting process, they are not just considered, but can be the impetus for creative decision making:
“The natural materials inspire me a lot, as can a woman with cool style give me an idea about a design – and of course, instinctively, without me doing it on purpose, a certain mood, a feeling flows into every piece of jewellery.” – Katerina Vassou.
With each piece finding its primordial form in Katerina’s sketches, she uses these renderings to envision how each form might engage with the wearer’s body.
This approach ensures that each piece is not merely a statement for statement’s sake, but rather something that complements its wearer.
The looks
With an understanding of this approach and ethos in mind, what does a Katerina Vassou piece look and feel like?
Unsurprisingly, it’s challenging to define Vassou’s pieces beyond this creative methodology. Each piece indeed feels unique. Some, like these gold disc earrings, are inspired by the natural world, with black lines overlaying the earthy gold, evoking streams of water or vines from a tree.

Elsewhere, this steel cuff bracelet has an industrial-cum-art deco feel. With an understated yet undeniable feeling of opulence shared between the two, it’s easy to see how either of these pieces could be a go-to for those wanting something that really brings a night-out look together.
