Introducing: Kopka – Behind The Brand

There’s a German proverb which goes: “With hat in hand, one gets on in the world.”

Hats can be fashion statements, making you stand out in a crowd. They protect you from the elements – keeping you warm in winter and protecting you from the sun in summer.

Hats can act as a status symbol – think about the sharp tailoring and eye-catching fedora hats worn by the Madison Avenue Advertising Executives in the popular TV show ‘Mad Men’, these men seemed more professional and more impressive thanks to the hats they donned, adding to their allure and mystique.

Enter luxury German knitwear brand Kopka, which offers a selection of stylish and warm hats in a range of colours to suit every style.

Popular among staff and customers at Brenda Muir, particularly when the temperature starts to drop, join us as we explore this timeless accessory.

Where it all began

Kopka Accessories was first founded in the 1950s in Bruhl, a town in western Germany about 12km north of Cologne. Bruhl is famous for having not one, but two, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, putting it on the map for cultural tourism. Today, the business is headquartered in the Czech Republic.

Hat bodies

Kopka started out life as a supplier of hat bodies for hat manufacturers worldwide. What are hat bodies you might ask? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Hat bodies are the raw, unfinished forms from which hats are made. It’s essentially an unshaped piece of felt, straw or other material that milliners (a person who designs, makes or trims women’s hats) and hat manufacturers use as the starting point for a finished hat.

Getting started

After almost five decades of hat body construction, Kopka decided to branch out and ‘throw their hat in the ring’ by launching their own in-house line of hats in the 1990s.

The company decided to do something to set itself apart, leaving it up to the wearer to decide the final shape of the hat they were wearing.

This was made possible thanks to the way Kopka’s hats are created, which allows for flexibility, enabling the wearer to fashion it however they wish, allowing the hat to mimic their own personal style and individualism. This focus on high-quality, minimally designed hats that played with the form of a hat became the basis of the original line.

Kopka Accessories has since expanded into a luxury knitwear brand with one goal: to create timeless, minimalist accessories made from the finest materials, such as Merino Wool, 100% Cashmere and 100% Wool. It also has lines made from Alpaca, Angora and even Yak.

Versatile to its core

With a product line ranging from hats and scarves to wrist-warmers and gloves, Kopka strikes a balance between the classics, such as Berets or Beanies, and more experimental products such as the Clochard Hat.

Kopka designers never rest on their laurels, continuously reimaging its diverse product range, playing with new materials such as Yak Wool or Beaver Felt, and looking for new ways to improve its core offering to provide customers with an elite accessories offering.

It’s also worth mentioning that all of Kopka’s products are genderless and one size fits all, making it the perfect item to gift to a friend or loved one

The ideal accessory

It’s well known that you can lose a percentage of your body heat through your head, with the British Medical Journal reporting the percentage is, in fact, 10% that gets lost through our heads.

With this in mind, it’s a no-brainer that you should be treating yourself to a warm and cosy hat for colder months. And better yet, if you can ensure the hat is a fashion-forward choice like the range from Kopka, you’ll keep clocking up those style points!
