Introducing Rainkiss – Behind the Poncho Brand

Rainkiss Logo

The UK, specifically Scotland, has an interesting relationship with rain and wet weather. Despite parts of the country having as much as 250 days of rainfall, its presence is still met with indignance from locals. While there’s no harm in manifesting a sunny day, maybe it’s time we embraced it!

Now, we’re not saying there’s anything wrong with a functional, sensible coat. But sometimes, life doesn’t need to be practical.

If clothes are about affirming our identity and mood, then it stands to reason that at least some of our clothes should reflect the fun times, the splashes of colour and joy on an otherwise dull, drab, and even dreich day, and that’s what Rainkiss are all about.

So, who are they? And what are they all about?

History

Created in Amsterdam (where it rains an average of 185 days per year), the idea for Rainkiss was inspired by founder Wessel Buis’s trips to Bali.
Requiring the lightweight flexibility a poncho offers, Buis found that the poor quality of local offerings left a lot of room for improvement.

Spotting a gap in the market for a poncho that was made from high-quality material, was durable, and fashionable, Wessel and his team have been creating ponchos that stand out among the rest since 2019.

The brand has continued to go from strength to strength with a wealth of eye-catching designs and colourful collaborations

Lightning in a Bottle

Like many brands stocked at Brenda Muir, catching their audience’s attention is only part of the story. A firmly modern brand with a future-focused ethos, Rainkiss are determined to leave its mark by, well, not leaving one at all.

Seeking to ‘create their own utopia’ through fiercely sustainable pieces, Rainkiss ponchos are made from 100% certified recycled polyester, or, as they put it, 20 bottles = 1 poncho.

Rainkiss actively contributes to a circular economy while reducing pressure on landfill sites and the environment by taking waste plastic products like these and putting them to good use.

Rainkiss’s packaging is also 100% recyclable, and with every poncho being one-size-fits-all, they have a return rate of just 3% – far lower than the industry average of 20%.

With numbers like these and a commitment to fair wages and workers’ rights, Rainkiss put silver linings on every cloud they come across.

The Looks

So finally, we come to the looks – it’s pretty incredible how unique each piece feels despite being from the same base design. With their imaginative use of colourways and patterns, you’ll find everything from the gloriously over-the-top to the understatedly intricate, but of course, the tartan-inspired design is our favourite.

Putting them on, the use case for a poncho like this is clear – waterproof and ideally suited to keeping you bone dry during even the wettest Scottish winter (or spring, summer, or autumn), the poncho feels sturdy without feeling stifling, perfect for taking the dog a quick walk or for an unexpected shower during festival season.

And that’s not all; hidden within the sleeve of each poncho, you’ll find a QR code that leads to a personalised weather forecast. Alongside their commitment to sustainability and of course, their gorgeous designs, it’s little details like this that make Rainkiss a unique proposition.
