What to Wear in Winter (The Complete Style Guide)

The weather gets colder, and you have to start thinking about what to wear to keep warm, but just because you have to layer up, doesn’t mean you can’t look good doing it!  In this guide, we’ll be going through a series of simple tips you can use to make sure you’re wrapping up warm without compromising on style. Once you’ve read this, you’ll have a better idea of how to layer and accessorise for those cold, winter days.  

Get a Good Coat  

This is probably the most important point on this list. A good coat will keep you warm and make sure you look smart no matter what else you’re wearing.   When choosing a coat, make sure to choose one that is both stylish and practical. You’ll want something that is versatile, but also keep you warm in the coldest weather.   However, this doesn’t mean you have to be boring. Experiment with your outfit by playing with colour- winter is often full of dull greys and blacks, so, try adding a splash of colour with a statement coat.   If you’re opting for something warmer and more luxurious, such as a down coat, make sure it’s synthetic.  

Get Yourself Some Wool Jumpers  

Wool and knitwear are great for layering, which is key in winter fashion. They come in all different styles and colours, so you can find a selection that fit your taste and personality.   The reason you should be opting for wool over any other material is because of its moisture-wicking capabilities. As the weather isn’t the driest in the Winter, you’ll want material that can withstand a bit of rain.   Additionally, if you’re layering heavily you might start to sweat. Again, wool can wick away any moisture, ensuring you’re comfy and cosy all day long. If you find wool itchy, opting for either merino or cashmere can be a good alternative.   Just make sure the jumper you’re choosing isn’t too bulky, or else it won’t fit well under your coat! 

Don’t Forget About Accessories!   

Accessories are a great way to add a pop of colour or excitement to your outfit while also keeping yourself warm. Hats, scarves, and gloves are all great options.   However, make sure they coordinate well with the rest of your outfit- you don’t want to look like you left the house in a rush!

By layering your clothing, you can add both warmth and style to your outfit.   A good rule of thumb is to start with a base layer, then add a sweater or shirt, followed by a coat or jacket. Base layers should consist of moisture-wicking materials, like wool or merino as stated above. It’s paramount that your coat or jacket is sturdy enough to allay any strong winds.   Another important note when layering is to ensure you’re keeping your outfit tight to your skin. This will make sure you’re warm and defended against winds and chills. You could do this by swapping wide-leg jeans with skinny jeans, and oversized items with slimmer fits.   Experiment with leggings and skirt variations! This will keep your legs warm if you’re out for a walk.   

Invest In Some Good Boots

Boots are essential for winter weather, both for practicality and style. They’ll keep your feet warm and dry while also giving you a boost in the style department.   When choosing boots, make sure to consider both function and form. You’ll want something that will keep your feet cosy, but also look good with any outfit.  Consider the tread as well when identifying your next pair. The paths and roads can be slippery in the Winter, so try and find something that’ll keep you upright! You can always wear them over thick, cosy socks if you find your feet get a tad cold.  

Ensure Your Clothing is Waterproof 

When you’re choosing your outer layers, ensuring their waterproof is key. Although other materials might be more stylish or feel nicer to touch, making sure your outfit is weatherproof is so important.   However, when choosing a waterproof coat, make sure it’s breathable. The last thing you want is to be layered up inside a stuffy outfit!
